Thiess Indonesia Sangatta Coal Mine & Thiess Indonesia Melak Coal Mine

As the world’s largest open-cut contract miner, Thiess was awarded this life of mine contract by Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC). The contract was an extension of our long-term contract mining activities at the KPC Mine, commencing in 1989 with earthworks, piping, tankage, water treatment plants and other ancillary works.

Today, we undertake a range of contract mining services for four of KPC’s pits including mine planning, stripping, blasting, overburden removal, mining and stock piling.

Thiess in Indonesia’s average annual coal production on site is 11MT per annum from 105 bank cubic metres of overburden. Mining across the pits is predominantly open cut and as required highwall auger mining.

Our workforce on this project, spanning administration, mining operations and maintenance, totals more than 2,300 personnel.

We are seeking experienced people for the following positions:

 

MANAGER OHS (OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY) – 926533

(SANGATTA)

Some of your duties will include:

  • Provide leadership, motivation, direction and assistance to staff and employees to improve Thiess safety management system education and compliance;
  • Implement improvements to Thiess Safety Management Systems to ensure the conservation of people, property, environment and profits;
  • Ensure the compliance of Safety Management Systems through regular monitoring programs so as to provide assurance that we meet our safety obligations for our people, business, legal, statutory, clients, community and shareholders;
  • Represent the company in government or industry safety groups and programs;
  • Responsible to facilitate the health and safety of employees through education, training and demonstration of the right behaviours;
  • Conduct regular reviews on safety performance and implementation of TSE standards, site risk management controls and safety improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct reviews of Project Risk Management controls. 
  • Promote operational (Supervisor/Superintendent) ownership of incident investigations, and review investigation reports to ensure integrity of findings.
  • Ensure close out of incident investigation reports and related actions within time frame.
  • Periodically compile and review incident data analysis and identify and implement improvement programs.  This is to include injury prevention programs towards achieving TRIFR targets.
  • Participate in investigations of significant incidents and identify deficiencies in risk control programs.
  • Conduct site Safety Audits as per schedule.  Follow through on audit outcomes and provide assistance as required.
  • Assist site team with preparation for external audits and continued compliance with OHSAS18001/ISO45001, and SMKP.
  • To monitor and follow-up on project corrective action status to ensure that they do not become overdue.
  • To be involved and informed in the implementation of health improvement initiatives and awareness programs.
  • To promote and support safety reward and recognition programs across the Projects.

 What skills and experience do you need?

  • Tertiary Graduate with relevant qualifications in a safety, engineering or similar discipline, with minimum of 15 years’ experiences in mining discipline and minimum 5 years professional experience in a similar role (Client relations, Subcontract management, Project management);
  • Extensive knowledge, skills and experience in Occupational Health & Safety management systems
  • A commitment to safety and a desire to maintain our Indonesian coal operations to world class international safety standards. You should also be able to clearly demonstrate previous results together with a pro-active commitment towards safety whilst having attained the teamwork and respect of local communities and adherence to relevant environmental standards;
  • Cross Cultural Management sensitivity and an understanding of community issues relevant to large mining projects within developing countries;
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; attention to details; good in coaching/mentoring and negotiation/mediation; Efficient; attention to details; good analytical; conflict resolution; sound decision making skills; excellent communication skills in English both verbal and written and computer literate.

 

SUPERINTENDENT PLANT OPERATIONS (BIG DIGGER & ANCILLARY) – 926442

(SANGATTA)

Some of your duties will include:

  • To ensure that the maintenance department goals are achieved, by following the procedures set out in the TMS.
  • Communication and reporting. Ensure maximum communication levels are maintained between workshop and operations personnel regarding breakdowns safety issues, and prioritizing of equipment repairs.
  • Ensure that all area supervisors accurately complete daily breakdown reports, supervisors shift report, PCR’s for submission the planning and administration before 8am every day. Ensure accurate   breakdown hours information is provided
  • Analysis of component condition and recommendation of parts required. Ensure correct procedures used when troubleshooting breakdowns and failures
  • Review operator’s checklist summary and mechanical inspection sheets, ensure submission to planning department with repair and parts recommendation. Ensure supervisors and mechanic raise recommended parts lists accurately to address all known work, breakdowns, and planned maintenance
  • Planning and co-ordination of shut down work in cooperation with planning department. Ensure all repairs are carried out in a cost effective and timely manner
  • Investigation and reporting of all accident damage to all equipment in the field and associated area, this includes operator abuse
  • Ensure a safe working environment for all employee by ensure all activities are carry out according to the work procedures in the TMC and the project management plan
  • Ensure that there is no impact on the environment from the activities that are carried out to operate and repair equipment by ensuring that the procedures in the TMS and Site Management plan are followed
  • Ensure that all maintenance tasks are carried out in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner.

What skills and experience do you need?

  • Mechanical Engineer or Ex Apprentice with minimum 15 years’ experience in mining equipment maintenance;
  • Requires a minimum 5 years’ experience in similar managerial role as Senior Superintendent Plant Operations;
  • Understanding the heavy plant business; knowledge in OEM products in Heavy Equipment; handling diagnostic skills in all aspects of mechanical and auto electrical heavy equipment repairs; have ability in resource planning and OHS&E supervision;
  • Mechanic experience on Thiess Heavy Equipment e.g.  Cat, Komatsu, Liebherr, Hitachi; Drills, Pump, Coal Hauling and Lifting Equipment.
  • Knowledge of welding procedures;
  • IT Literacy; Excellent communication skills in English both verbal and written;
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; good in coaching/mentoring and negotiation/mediation; good analytical; conflict resolution; sound decision making skills;

 

n October 2008, Thiess Indonesia secured a eight-year contract for the development and operation of a greenfield coal mine located near Melak in East Kalimantan and owned by the Bayan Group. The Melak mine is divided into two different mine concessions, Teguh Sinar Abadi and Firman Ketaun Perkasa.

Thiess undertook mine planning, overburden removal, coal mining, and coal loading and transportation from the mine site to the port. Works also involved site infrastructure development including construction of a 100-person staff accommodation camp, an equipment maintenance workshop, office complex, fuel storage facilities and construction of explosives magazines.

This project commenced with a production target of two million tonnes of coal in the first year, ramping up to four million tonnes in the third year, with a current mining rate of 2.2 million tones per annum.

Our project team has also driven innovation in safety on this project, using multi-media channels to reinforce HSE as the number one priority. These include video message broadcasts played continuously on screens on site, messages on FM radio, and DVDs that employees can take home to watch.

We are seeking experienced people for the following position

Expression of Interest – Senior Supervisor Warehouse – 92656

(Melak)

Some of your duties will include:

  • Responsible for the management of all Warehouse operations.
  • Liaise with the Balikpapan and Jakarta Logistics department to efficiently expedite materials to site.
  • Review and monitoring of all Store costing, receipts, issues, storage, allocation, and inventory levels.
  • Communicate effectively with all parties on matters relating to receipts and deliveries of Spare Parts and/or operational materials on arrival.
  • Ensuring that the best pricing and practices are put into place and monitored in relation to maximizing the best financial outcome for the Project.
  • Daily communication with other departments in relation daily activities, expediting priorities, reviews, and reports.
  • Liaise with Central Warehouse Balikpapan for the management of the JDE Warehouse Centralized Inventory Management.
  • Management of all stock takes and reconciliation’s in relation to under / over.
  • Monthly Store evaluations of Stock and Direct Charge Materials.
  • Maintenance and distribution of KPI’s in relation to all Store Stock.
  • Management of the Fuel and Oil requirements, shipping, receipts, and daily stock-takes, and reconciliation’s.
  • Oversee processing and data entry of daily fuel, oil and plant returns and follow up input issues as required.
  • Managing the end of month SMU Hours reconciliation (Forklift and LV).
  • Managing the correction of daily cost committed, follow up with journal and reversing cost in the system
  • Assisting Planning section in relation to correction on Work Order and any other financial issues.
  • Lease with Site Admin Manager/Project Manager in all of financial issues.

What skills and experience do you need?

  • Minimum of Degree qualification (S1) in any discipline; requires a minimum 5 years' professional experience in senior leadership role as Senior Supervisor Warehouse with demonstrated Financial management, Cost administration, Inventory Control, Warehouse management and Logistic management skills;
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; good in coaching/mentoring and negotiation/mediation; good analytical; conflict resolution; sound decision making skills; excellent communication skills in English both verbal and written and computer literate
